Near Templetown in County Louth is the small ruin of Kilwirra Church. The church was built in the 15th century dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name Kilwirra derives from the irish ‘Cill Mhuire’ meaning ‘Mary’s Church’.
It’s believed that Knights Templar once built the church who where based on the Cooley peninsula for a long time. In Kilwirra the Templars have left visible traces for posterity as their insignia of the cross and the lamb are engraved in some of the old gravestones.
